This week Sandalwood has witnessed nine releases and a few out of the lot stand apart because of its themes. Prajwal Devaraj starrer ‘Gana’ is a murder mystery set within a time travel narrative.
Crime Reporter Gana (Prajwal) moves into an old house. He receives a phone call from Sujatha (Vedhika) through landline. Though the call is intended for someone else, the call is repeatedly connected to Gana. Sujatha seeks Gana’s help regarding her passport. Soon they realises that they are both in different time periods. While, Sujatha is in 1993, Gana is in 2022. What happens next forms the crux of the film.
Indian cinema has produced numerous films that delve into the concept of time travel. ‘Gana’ is one such film, but it does not present anything particularly unique, as it is a remake of Telugu film ‘Play Back’ that itself shares similarities with a previous work.
Director Hariprasad Jakka has tried to craft an engaging narrative and an exciting script, but the overall execution fails to elevate it to its maximum potential. In spite, of lots of twists and turns, the movie is slow and fails to strike the audience. Though the movie has a few interesting moments here and there, lack of proper narration in the comes as a speed breaker.
The film mainly revolves around Gana and Sujatha’s characters and Prajwal and Sujatha have done justice to their roles. Sampath Raj, Ravi Kale, Vishal Hegde, Ramesh Bhatt, Krishi Tapanda have given adequate support.
If you’re a fan of sci-fi movies that delve into time travel and interconnected narratives, then Gana is a film to consider.
