Whether it’s about the educational system in ‘Vascodigama’ or mobile phone addiction in ‘Selfie Mummy Google Daddy’, director Madhuchandra’s films have always been humorous and convey socially relevant concepts. ‘Mr Rani’ is an attempt in following one’s genuine interest and resisting family pressure to give in to pressure about schooling and employment. But a bad narrative hampers the film and the message isn’t truly understood.

‘Mr Rani’ tells the story of Raja (Deepak Subramanya) has aspirations of becoming an actor and shining as a hero since childhood. But his father him to study engineering. Raja after engineering lies to his father that he has landed a job in the Google and comes to city to get a chance in films. After much struggles, he finally gets a role in a film, but it’s as a female character. He takes it on and slowly becomes the film industry’s leading heroine. What happens next forms the crux of the film.

Many well-known male actors in global scenario including the Indian film industry, have made brief cameos in costume as women, mainly for humorous scenes. Sharan played such a role in ‘Jai Lalitha’ which was released a few years ago. Now Deepak Subramanya has undergone such a transformation into a female actor for a particular purpose. The film is an absurd comedy made for the sole intention of entertaining the audience.

The film is not just about a man turning woman for various reasons, but story jumps about throughout space, into parallel universe and beyond black holes. Even though the movie doesn’t make much sense and in terms of story and narration, those problems makes the audience laugh.

In spite of some short comings, Deepak Subramanya’s performance as the female star is the main attraction of the film. With an elegant display of femininity in his movements and posture, combined with makeup and costumes, Deepak convincingly presents as a woman. Madhuchandra plays a filmmaker who is in love with the actress turned actor. Srivatsa Shyam as manager Manja excels in his role. Parvathy Nair has nothing much to do in the film.

‘Mr Rani’ is the type of film that’s most enjoyable when you’re in the mood for light hearted fun. If you’re looking for something that challenges your brain, you won’t find it here.
