Rajkumar Hirani is one of the few directors who captivate his audience with a humour, sarcasm and emotions. He is one of the directors who concentrates more on the writing rather than other aspects. The emotions that Rajkumar Hirani’s characters evoke in viewers have carved out a special place in their hearts and a craving for his films.
Rajkumar Hirani is back after a gap of five years with ‘Dunki’. This time he tells the story of illegal immigrants. Compared to his previous films, ‘Dunki’ is not Hirani’s best work, but it is entertaining and makes the audience very emotional
‘Dunki’ refers to illegal immigrants who enter a country without a proper visa. The film revolves around a group of youngsters who want to go abroad, particularly to London for a better living. But going there through proper visa is not a simple task. It’s lined with difficult examinations which the team must pass to obtain the necessary visa. Enter Hardy Singh (Shahrukh Khan) who try to ease their tasks. But in spite of various efforts, they fail in the tasks.
With no other go, they choose to go along a less-travelled, but a very dangerous path that leads to their destination. Will they successfully reach their destination and what happens next forms the crux of the film.
Rajkumar Hirani has chosen a socially relevant issue in this film also. The film has a good dose of patriotism and has a lot of emotions. In Hirani’s previous films there were distinctive feel-good humour. But the humour is missing here because of the content and the struggles of the characters. Though the first half of the film has some good humour, there is no space for humour in the second half. The second half of the film is very serious and emotional. Moreover, the film’s pace and overdose of the emotions makes it a not so special film.
This is Shahrukh Khan’s third film of the year and this time the actor showcases the emotional side of him with ease. Taapsee Pannu is also very good as Mannu. The make-up of both the actors as seniors is horrible to watch. Even though SRK is the main attraction, Hirani makes sure to give the other actors plenty of opportunities to shine. Vicky Kaushal is very good as Sukhi. Though he has a little screen presence, he woos the audience his performance. Boman Irani, have essayed their characters well.
The film is not close to Hirani’s previous films and hence the audience may feel dejected in spite of some strong points. But yet a good one-time watch.
