‘Naanu Mattu Gunda’ which was released a couple of years back, might not be huge hit at the box-office, but the film managed to garner the attention of the viewers because of the emotional bondage of humans and animals. Raghu Hassan who produced the original is back with the sequel of the film. This time Raghu apart from producing, has directed and scripted the film.
’Naanu Mattu Gunda’ featured Shivaraj K R Pete as the hero. However, the hero dies in the climax leaving the dog alone. The sequel starts with the birth of Shankara’s (Shivaraj K R Pete) son. Gunda, the dog waits at his master’s grave until the birth of Shankara’s son, whose mother also dies during childbirth. Shankara’s close friend Bhoregowda (Govindegowda) adopts the baby. Gunda also follows Junior Shankara to his new home.
As the boy grows, he starts distancing from the dog only to understand the significance of Gunda later. But it’s too late, as the pet ages and eventually dies. Years later, Junior Shankara (Rakesh Adiga) embarks on a new journey, believing that Gunda has been reincarnated, which leads him to Indu (Rachana Inder) and her dog, raising the question of whether loyalty can endure through different lifetimes.
In terms of narrative, the film has its emotional peaks, particularly in scenes that highlight Gunda’s loyalty and his connection with the family. However, the screenplay often seems jumbled, with numerous subplots and a bad comedy. The comic scenes which come in bits and pieces featuring Sadhu Kokila, Raghu Ramanakoppa, Vijay Chendur and Manju Pavagada not only evoke any laughter, but also weakens the effectiveness of emotions.
The performances breathe life into this emotional journey. Rakesh Adiga portrays Shankara Junior effectively, embodying both sorrow and optimism. Rachana Inder as Indu injects vibrancy to her character. The supporting cast, including Govindegowda, Nayana, Avinash have done their bit. The songs by R P Patnaik are very soothing, particularly the title song rendered by Amoghavarsha Deshapande. Thanvik’s cinematography is one of the highlights of the film.
For those who have a strong connection with their pets, ‘Naanu Mattu Gunda 2’ is a good watch.
